Spiders don't take down their webs at night? What kinda children's books are you reading? :/

Spiders keep their webs up 24/7 to catch things and have to repair them a lot. Webs can take hours to make. how counterproductive would it be to remove a web every night and build a new one? ESPECIALLY when a lot of bugs come out at night like lightning bugs or the ever popular moth. That's like passing up free food.

Maybe it was in one the bed-time stories someone read to him one night :p. Anyway, I really don't know much about spiders but doesn't how they make and manager their webs depend on the species of spider?

Are you sure? That would be an evolutionary fail habit as Kurai pointed it out.

Wow, I would never want to go there. I am extremely fearful of spiders. I would hate for hundreds of spiders to be crawling on me if I walk there.

When I first saw the picture, it actually looked like those fake webs that people put on their bushes on Halloween.

I could be wrong. Not stating it as fact, and didn't mean to if it came out that way. Just what I thought happened for none complex webs.

Oh and making fun of me for it is rude, and unnecessary.

Maybe JK Rowling was actually writing a true story?

Maybe spiders have gotten to the point in the evolutionary cycle that allows them to reason. In that case, I would be scared. Imagine if spiders were the size of a dog!

Why would you be scared? There are plenty of real life creatures just as dangerous as a dog sized spider would be. As for the reasoning part..... yeah.... honestly I am going with Occams raazor here. Is it possible that they have evolved to reason and talk with each other, or is it that they have simply all constructed webs in the same area due to there being more bugs there? Is it just coincidence or a new age of spiders where they work together like ants.. Simplest sounding hypothesis here sounds like the bug theory....

That can't be it, I'm pretty sure for them to evolve to that kind of level it would take thousands of years for that to happen and it's a very small chance they would evolve that way considering their species.

Maybe it just happened to click in one great Messiah spider.

And really? No one can lie and say they wouldn't be freaked out by a 20 lb arachnid with eight legs, eight eyes, and razor sharp pinsers go right at you.

I would kill it, cook it, and eat it to gain its knowledge and courage.

Evolution is genetic. It is necessarily slow.

Behaviour on the other hand is very experimental. It can be unusual, unique, and can change spontaneously. It's incorrect to stereotype behaviour. There is much diversity in nature. Animals can sometimes be found caring for the offspring of other animals. Hunter-prey creatures can sometimes be found living in harmony.

Well, what he talks about is beyond the capabilites of current spiders, we are not just talking about behaviors here. He is talking about them evolving to a level were they can have complex reasoning etc, not just a change in behavior that would make them become more social, or otherwise.

For a example, a insect isn't all of a sudden gonna be able to program a computer due to a behavior change.

Well, spiders might be able to communicate? who are we to say they can't? We've found out that great apes, dolphins, and elephants are self aware. Animals communicate in the wild all the time. Being able to reason with one another already is an ability of many animals. Even ants can do such, even bees can do such. Why should such behaviors merely be limited to group dwellers? I know it's not as useful in solo dwelling animals, but it's not too far fetched to assume they can communicate -somewhat- and be able to work together for reasons whether it involves an abundance of food or not
