You have two ropes (or fuses, or whatever). Each of them requires one hour to burn completely. However, they may burn irregularly, such that half of the rope may burn in more or less than half an hour; you don't know the burning time of anything less than a full rope. How can you measure 45 minutes accurately with these ropes?

 

Light both ends of one rope and one end of the other. After 30 minutes, you will have burned 30 minutes' of rope from each end of the first rope, or thus one hour worth of rope -- the entire rope. When the flames from the first rope get together and extinguish themselves, light the other end of the second rope. 30 minutes of rope will remain, but this will burn in 15 minutes when burning from both ends.
