I usually read high fantasy style series, with some science fiction or historical fiction as well.

My favorite bar none: A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin... best series I've ever read, combines fantasy elements with gritty realism.

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan is a good series as well, but books 4-9 drag somewhat (6-8 especially).

The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks was a good story way back when... the sequels to it were decent but none of the same caliber... the complete story arc is however somewhat interesting as recently Mr. Brooks has been tying his earlier fantasy works together with his newer post-apocalyptic series.

Ender's Game is one of my favorite all time books, and certainly my favorite sci-fi work. None of the sequels however even approach the genius of the first book.

Hey, quinta. When I saw that you posted, I personally though "Oh boy, it's going to be a bunch of math text books and science liturature" since you are incredibly knowledgable on both subjects. However, I'm not surprised about your selections.

You seem to be the kind of person to like shakespeare and Mark Twain. I personally can't handle shakespeare since I have a terrible time understanding Old English. The only book my him I've read is Romeo and Juliet, what a mouthful that book was...

1984's an awesome book, same with Tolkien's work. Some of O'Henry's short stories are really good too.

I loved that book actually. Also I like Fyodor Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov and the Odyssey and the Iliad.

I don't. His books are too confusing to read with all the extra words and completely awkward grammar and sentence structure.

Me neither. Although I could see why people loved those back then. Bad jokes, guys in tights, that sort of thing.

I don't like shakespear (as anything I had to read for school), but I like old english. A piece of Beowulf I read was awesome with the old words and structure :D (It was modernized though, I wouldn't understand a thing from original)

Oh oh!! That guy is an amazing writer. I absolutely LOVE Andromeda Strain.

For all you fancy high thinkers, I recommend a book called 'The Dancing Wu-Li Masters'. It has nothing to do with dance, rather it's a book on quantum physics. REALLY interesting stuff in it, and pretty easy to understand (For QP anyway o_O)

2001: A Space Odyssey. It's nothing really extraordinary in terms of literature, but it's pretty good.

Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Machetta

Good lord I couldn't write them all... (I'll just put some more recent reads)

Well one that I recently read (but doubt many of you would like) was Riddle Master by Patricia A. McKillip, after I finished it, I considered picking it up again at the beginning.

Also, the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik is pretty good to, its the Napoleonic wars with DRAGONS (rawr)

also Peter Jackson is making a movie out of the temeraire series.

and while everyones on the note of classics, I found the three musketeers by Alexander Dumas to be quite entertaining

oh yeah, new author I just remembered I really liked

The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, Day 1) by Patrick Rothfuss.

Extremely good writing. Looking forward to see what he does with the series... if he can keep it up, might give Martin a run for his money as my favorite.
