Well, since your brain was still in REM, when the hands were pounding on your chest, your brain thought them as real and sent impulses to your nerves which made them think it was real and they sent pain messages back to the brain.

Its all mind over matter. The mind says this, so the body has to obey, even if what the brain says isn't real. It this is a major problem for you then I say consult a doctor. While we can be helpful, we don't have degrees, and only a doctor has a chance of making the sleep paralysis stop.

edit: wow you two beat me to it, o well.

But you explained it better than I did. My ideas was only a basic hypothesis, I had no idea if it was actually possible.

Well, there is also a phenomenon that occurs where you aren't dreaming, it's not REM, and it occurs closer to waking up or falling asleep, and can involve vivid hallucinations. Take a look at this site, and you'll see that it is actually well-documented and, reassuringly, nothing to lose sleep over ;). In fact, the worst damage that is being dealt is the psychological damage associated with you being freaked out by the experience. If you're not being debilitatingly bothered by it, you're just fine.

Everybody here is right - if you are that worried, see a doctor.

But also ursawarrior, if you read more about sleep paralysis (especially from the site I quoted from) it also mentions that some people experience vivid sensations, like pounding on your chest (MedTerms even specifically mentions that). So even though I do not have a medical degree, I am positive that you have nothing to worry about.

Just a note - in about five years, I will have a medical degree, so if you are still worried then ask me again! :p

    wordems @ what Shadow said

your body sends out a chemical to paralyze you while you're asleep - then when it's time to wake up, it sends out a counter-chemical... in some ppl either the chemicals don't come in the right amounts, or they get sent at the wrong time...

so you can be awake, but you can't move - the sensation is very terrifying and you may feel all sorts of things... but it's natural

and yeah, the pounding on your chest was most likely a combination of your admitted active imagination and your heart slamming away in terror

ursa has a point there. Ijiff might have accessed his memory from future! I mean, I've heard somewhere that we remember both past and future, just can't recall most of it (and nothing from future). How'd you do dat? ;p

I used to wake up in the middle of the room alot when I was little. I had dreams of falling like from balloon or smg and bam! I wake up on the floor. For a few years old child's size the distance wasn't simply falling off bed, I must've walked there or smg

I had dreams of jumping off my bunk bead when I was little, only to wake up just before hitting the ground, I think I had that dream no less than 10 times.
