I'm thinking about med too, so do any of you happen to know what the best school for premed in California is?

Depends. UC Berkely is pretty good, but again...weird place. UCLA is one of the hardest to get into. Stanford is another good one, not a big fan of the "Stanford bubble" thing they have going on there.

Also look at Cal States. Don't rule them out just because they're cal states.

One interesting choice would be to go outside the US for med school. Caribbean med schools are some of the best in the world. University of Kingston is I think the hardest med school to get into in the world. Problem is that you might not get all the hardware you would get here in the US.

That's the extent to what I know, sorry I couldn't be better help.

I was trying to choose between Stanford and UCLA, actually, but it's kind of hard to decide. Plus I actually like the urban scene in Berkeley believe it or not. :D

Oh no, Berkely is a beautiful campus and a pretty good surrounding place...it's just the people living in it. I mean...they have tree people!

I personally would say UCLA. Its a good mix of a good school and a cool, chill place. But I guess first priority should be getting in first :p

UCSF is one of the top schools in the nation. I think it's perhaps the top three most well funded research medical schools in the country too. The school is so often overlooked over Harvard, Stanford, Mayo Clinic, etc.

I have to strongly disagree about the Caribbean med schools. MCAT score averages are below 25 and GPA average is around 3.0. They are schools where you desparately want to get into an MD school and don't have the stats to get into schools in the US.

lol I really highly doubt Univ. of Kingston med school is harder to get into than Harvard, Wash Univ in St. Louis, Johns Hopkins, U of M...

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about UCSF. I've heard it was good, but I didn't know it was that good. The one thing I like about the bay area is that there's so many good schools around. Maybe it's not like Boston or anything but these schools are actually cheap(ish). If I went to Stanfprd or whatever I'll probably end up working my ass off half the day or joining the military. :p

Got my first secondary today, from Michigan!! Although one of the essays is....

"What would you, as a person, add to our diverse community?"

...which is like my least favorite question of all time. Rrrargh.

Tell them you're well versed in the teachings of Khala, and would gladly enlighten any who would listen.

This would actually be a useful thread to me if I weren't Canadian. Oh well.

This is the biggest pain in the butt process I've ever had to go through. At this point I've got 10 secondaries in. I have two more, but I may not do them (Hopkins and Duke). It's just too much work for my chances of actually getting in. Plus I am tired of writing essays.

So now I get to wait for interviews! I'll need all the luck I can get...

I am actually getting my bachelors degree in biomedical engineering, not biology. However, I do know that getting a degree in biology is not as difficult, although of course depending on the school there is some variation. Biomedical engineering is a much harder program, especially at a school such as Michigan (and I am counting on that fact to weigh heavily in my favor during this process haha).

Pre-meds can actually major in almost anything - they just have to make sure to satisfy certain course requirements. Majors such as chemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, etc. make this easier since there is so much overlap.

My suggestion is to major in whatever you want regardless of the difficulty involved. If you truly enjoy it, it won't matter.

I can try to give you more specific advice if you know what undergraduate institution we are talking about though, so let me know!

Sorry everybody for the triple post, but it's been a while and nobody has posted here.

An update - I've had three interviews (YAY!) - at GW, Maryland, and VCU. And this week I got some awesome news... I GOT INTO MARYLAND! I am going to be a future doctor!!!!

That's a huge load off my back now. Now to figure out the finances....

Holla everybody! Just letting you all know I am now living in Baltimore and med school has officially begun... so I will most likely become a lot less active on this site, unfortunately. I'll still probably check it regularly, just won't post as much. If anybody has any questions about med school or my Raynor's Revenge campaign, you can still send me a PM and I will be able to respond in a timely fashion (especially because of the e-mail notification).

I will miss being able to spend hours on the forums, lol. Hopefully Starcraft II won't cause me to fail out of med school hahahaha. See you all around!

You're not active anyway, sorry to say.
