Constructive criticism is a wonderful way to sort out the true artists from the large mass of wannabe artists. Just comment negatively, but constructive, on a novel, story, poem, drawing, or another piece of art someone has put up and see how they react. If they appreciate "i love it" more than negative criticism, they're just a wannabe who will never achive anything.

True artists want to improve their art more than anything. They'll swallow their pride and work for it.

For example, one could tell that ArchLimit appreciated constructive before he actually said so, by looking at his pieces. ;)

@thrif: You're absolutely right. I hate when friends or family give the old "It's really... good." comment (this one is particularly insulting "That's a lot better than i could ever do"), just because they don't want to hurt your feelings or anything - but as you've just said, i fully agree that while making art hurts, there's nothing more pleasant than a perfect result.

Baaah, yea. Dead on there, SirBaron. I usually wake up at like, 10AM and don't really stop working at it til like, 3AM in the morning. It know, it's absolutely absurd and sick. I mean obviously there's dinner, breaks, one man bathroom parties, miscellaneous trips to be made throughout the day. But yea I'm more or less addicted. But by the end of it all, man, do I feel good. And I celebrate by slappin' down my laptop cover and nose diving into bed, lol.

The wonderful life of a 3D junkie.

Thrif i like what you said mate aye.

Earlier i posted that critisism is based on the contexts regarding the intentions of the critisism, and the perception of the critisim. I still reckon thats true,...

However, your post made me start thinking about critisism in a more practical context, which is really all to do with the receiver of the critisism in my opinion, like the artists people have spoken of. Im really only emphasising your post here,... but ill continue anyway it helps me consider it all and take it in.

Ideally,... someone who really wants to improve their art or better understand their art, or their ideas or whatever, would make all critisism positive. All of it. .. ideally.

Its a big world, you cant like everyone and everything, and likewise not everyone can like you and/or your ideas or n'all. Dont take it personally, its just how it is. Given that, the same goes for critism, as in some people are going to give positive critisism intended to be positive, some people will give destructive critisism intended to be positive, destructive critisism intended to be destructive, destructive to be positve, constructive or destructive critisism with other intentions such as wanting feedback themselves, who knows. .. sorry to ramble,.. anyway..

The point is though, that quite like you said Thrif,... the ideal way to improve yourself is to take all critisism the good and the bad, and MAKE it good, MAKE it useful, regardless of the intentions of the critisism. Learn what you can from it, understand it as best you can, and move forward.

This attitude makes all critisism positive and constructive, regardless of the givers intentions.

not tryin to steal your thunder mate, just emphasising the point and gettin my thoughts clear at the same time. i think we're on par anyway, let me know if ya dont agree and ive missed somethin

    cheer mate.

*EDIT; i just re-read archlimits post about critisism,.. im very tired haha... and yeah i think this post is just stealing everyones ideas haha, so yeah archlimit and thrif, nice ideas n'all haha sorry to just repeat you both. at least this stuff got me thinking :)
