    jseph, gfto.

on ultimate warrior (a show pitting warriors from different times against each other) they tested a knight's helmet (similar to a viking's) against a pirate's flintlock pistol and blunderbus. the blunderbus penetrated the armor, but the flintlock pistol only dented it, as drie said. stop trying to cause trouble.

Ned Kelly's (australian outlaw) armour stopped rifle fire....until they shot him in the leg >>

    However pirates still win

I'd like to see a viking survive that!

Yeah, except Vikings are FAR more mobile than a pirate ship could ever be. Once the pirates get off the first couple shots, pretty much the sighting shots, the Vikings will have figured out what angle the pirate ship needs to be at to fire. They move so their either fore or aft the galleon or frigate, and let loose with flaming arrows.

Not to mention the longboats can rock the rivers too.

Oh, and pirates are cowards. Vikings know no fear.

I think it was more than the leg... :(

Vikings are basically pirates that have been imbued by the Norse Goddess of Rape, Pillage and Plunder. Normal pirates are the last of the last. They lose to Vikings. They lose to ninjas. Hell, they probably even lose to freaking vampires.

Pirates can't either. Can't kick with a peg or paddle with a hook. Their layers and layers of clothing weigh them down, they're completely out of shape, water gets into their brain through their eye socket. The food in their beard attracts sharks, as to the urine stains in their long johns. Their hats buckle under the weight of the water and cover their one good eye, and the gold in their teeth weigh them down to, and so does the gold bullion they've always got stashed in the front of their trousers.

So against a vampire, yeah, it'd probably be a pretty close match.

Pirates have rifle and cannons. Pirates own Vikings. End of discussion.

By the time you get close enough to a Viking to drop one with an inaccurate pirate gun you're already dead.

That if the vikings could get close enough to a pirate ship with out getting blown to pieces by cannons. Also, Somalian pirates use AK-47's I think those would cut a viking to shreds before he had a chance to even respond. Also, regular flint lock rifles had a long enough range to shoot them before they ever got into swinging range.

Pfft, most cannons weren't even sighted, couldn't hit a small, low, fast longboat, hell, they struggled to get a galleon at more than a few feet away from the broadside. You'd have to get a very good shot to take down a Viking, with their extreme pain tolerance on top of berserker rage, which would be extremely difficult to do with freaking vikings boarding your ship and even if you did have luck and took one down, you wouldn't have time to reload the clumsy thing, added to the fact that flintlocks are extremely unreliable, not much losses would occur by flintlock. Vikings could also through axes, so there goes the duex ex machina of engaging at range. Then, it's down to cutlass against shield, axe and hammer. I think that speaks for itself.

Starcraft 2 vikings beat somalian pirates, don't pervert this away from the original intention.

Starcraft 2 vikings don't exist. Somalian pirates do. Hence why the Pirates also have RPG's, AKM assault rifles, and grenades at their disposal.

You do realise that comparing Vikings to modern day pirates is like comparing modern day pirates to cyborgnetic space Vikings from the future, don't you?

And if you're taking the modern day pirates as your definition of what a pirate actually is, then you'll have to include all the pasty skinned schmoes who have ever downloaded a movie, song, or porn off of the internet because they don't have the strength to make it to the shops and are allergic to sun, human contact and not-touching-their-keyboard. Even if you do include Somalian pirates as well, you've still supporting a pretty useless overall cohort who' would be flattened, murdered and raped by the Vikings of old, and preferably in that order, too.
