Yes EonMaster, it probably would. And no Fenix I think it goes much more further than that.
But hey I am not going to defend my position since I never bothered to research details on this. Feel free to do the work for me though and post results.

I'd very much like to meet a person who wouldn't consider a game a game on a professional level because of the limitations.
One of the beauties of SC for example is the limited set of units, and the game is basically the constant adapting to the other's units as well as their use. Which is essentially infinitely changing finite things, yet it's still fun, and people play it professionally ;)

It's a game because of the random positions.

A game with a finite number of configs isn't a game, but a contest.

So in that frame of mind chess is just like a sport. Where you are trying to guess what the other person/tram will do in the near future or next move so you can counter act it and win. Mind you calling chess a sport is a hard thing to do. it's really whoosy compared to any other sport I know. Heck even curling or the World Poker Tour have more action. And they are barely sports. I know those geeky Russian chess masters would disagree with me but meh. I'm just used to sports being a game where you put your body on the line in some form.

Chess is a mind game. Seriously, I would be mentally exhausted after playing a few rounds at tournaments when I was in my high school team. Sadly, I haven't played much since then, but you know when you used to be good when you could see possible checkmates against you 3+ turns in advance and be able to stop them in time. :D

Whats your definition of contest? I could say American professional Football isn't a sport because the Superbowl is a contest to see who is best. World Cup is a contest, so futbol/soccer, isn't a sport. Tour de France is a contest, so cycling isn't a sport. etc

I think that what he meant was that just bevause it's a contest doesn't mean it's a sport ;)

Self inflicted doesn't count, it has to be from outside sources.

It is. Because of the US economic crash, Germany couldn't sell goods to us.

Anytime the US stock exchange goes down, the German and Japanese ones drop shortly after.
