You make an interesting point, but I think our lungs are probably better adapted to deal with smoke and air pollutants than radioactive gas

I mean, just walking around in the world, there are many pollutants that we inhale that we aren't even aware of. If you look at a lung of a deceased non-smoking adult, it still has black spots all over it from pollutants in the air. People who smoke have the black spots too, just a lot more and a lot higher in concentration.

I think that smog can be just as bad, but the fact that people can't blow it right into our faces makes us sorta overlook it. Everything is case-specific, too. I mean, I don't hold my breath if I walk past a person who is smoking a cigarette on the sidewalk because I have serious doubts that it does that much more additional damage to inhale that single whiff of diffused cigarette smoke than the countless breaths of polluted air that I inhale as I walk around the city.

But if someone is being inconsiderate and smoking somewhere where they shouldn't, I'll be the first to ask them to stop, as opposed to whacking them over the head straight off the bat and calling them selfish or insensitive.

Ahh. Smoking. The one thing I can't tolerate.

For me, it's alright if they smoke in public or private, as long they are alone.

    @Nikzad

Yeah the world is basically filled with smog but filling your lungs with smog AND second hand smoke can do more damage, even if you inhale a tiny whiff. Every little thing adds up into a big one.

I always hold my breath whenever someone lights up. I even do that even if someone I'm talking to is smoking.

Smoking not only takes countless years off your life, reduces your overall health and takes years off everyone else around you. But it also increases littering by a decent magnitude in built up areas and drains income from low income families !

If it didn't support the economy(Arguably since lots of studies find it reduces productivity and taxs may not cover medical expenses) i'd be violently against it ...and i guess us non smokers get to live longer than everyone else xD

On a more morbid note someone i know who smoked from the age of about 15 has now been diagnosed with cancer at 18. It may have not been a direct link but i'm sure it amplified the effects due to his weakened body and a daily boost of Carcinogens.

    I love this graph http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cancer_smoking_lung_cancer_correlation_from_NIH.svg
Though it does ignore other variables such as car fumes, the fact we live long enough to get cancer etc

i know alot of people who smoke, friends and especially family members.

I must say though... when I was young... Smoking around me was a constant... I couldnt stand it. But As i got older and health hazards became for apparent, my mother father sister cousins friends.. basicly everyone I know.. where they smoke whether it be at a restuarant or at home.. will either go outside or stick their head out a window and has become quite tolerable.

As for a-holes who arent as considerate.. they can all die. Second hand smoking is serious and I use to have real troubles breathing at night and now have a serious un-explained couph when seasons change.

Smokers are filth. Who gave them the right to spew toxic gas where people walk by, or in enclosed buildings that people regularly wish to access? Who gave them the right to toss their toxic detritus on the ground as if it were somehow not trash, and have on many occasions started lethal fires doing this? The only reason smoking is tolerated is because it has always been tolerated, if it was some newly introduced thing, it would be viewed as a hideous scourge.

... He told them to die in agony. I said they were selfish... that's a huge difference.

Most of the smokers that I see smoke around stores or other places where a lot of people shop or look around. I really hate the smell as well. How can people take the smell of it, and even more, how can they take inhaling it into their bodies?

My dad actually can't smell, never could.

My dad started smoking because of a stupid mistake, hanging around the wrong people at his old work.

The thanatos complex is strong in many people, like a slow suicide. I believe all smokers subconsciously have a desire for their own demise.
