I smoke and take offense to some of the things being said here. Please don't assume all people who take part in something go about it the same way.

If I am in a public area that legally permits smoking, I will smoke. I keep distance from people who are not smoking and great distance from people with kids. When my sister comes over with her 2 young kids to MY house, I smoke outside.
You wanna get pissed off at someone smoking a cig 5 feet from the main entrance to your dorm, fair enough. Please don't ***** at all smokers as some of us do have common courtesy.

As far as smoking bans go, I honestly feel they are unconstitutional in America. The decision should go to the business owner. If you want to drink or work in a bar that allows it, ok. If you want to drink or work in a bar that does not allow it, ok.
In my state their were many waitresses complaining after a smoking ban went into affect. Seems smokers tip well and tend to go to places where they can smoke while they drink (friend's house, places with indoor and out door bars).

I don't mind if people smoke, probaply because my parents smoke, it's their own decision and they have their own reasons that I don't understand.

Here mostly kids smoke in bus stops and other public places so adults have probaply already learnt to not to or they just don't want to show that they're the tough guys. When I walk under a bridge where there's some teens smoking I hold my breath. If I breath every day a bit of that **** then when I'm old my breathing will be hard. Tar doesn't vanish anywhere from your lungs right?

In my opinion it's stupid that smoking is so popular among teens. Smoking teens think that they're brave because they 'dare' to smoke.

All this hate for smokers/the act of smoking just reminds me of how awesome smoking is.

Why not? Look just how it provokes savage reactions and condemnations and hate in so called 'people who want to preserve their lives'.

Don't we all just love things and people we can condemn without pangs of guilt? :)

You just sound like you smoke to annoy people.

And how can be throwing a bunch of chemicals around and into your body be that great?

    I don't. I smoke because I desire to.

I have no answer to your second question though. You might as well ask 'Why is playing Starcraft that great?'

Madeener, you're in needler's last paragraph. And so long as you don't make others smoke your fumes, be my guest to blacken your lungs, make your fingers stink and discolour, and cough up blood in the near future. Yeah, sounds just awesome :)

@ madeener. Firstly, although the reason you smoke may truly be because you simply desire to, the reason you desire to is because you're addicted.

Also if your attitude truly is just 'Why not?', and you truly do enjoy provoking savage reactions, condemnations and hate from people who want to preserve lives, why not pump yourself full of morphine and rub a cheesegrater against your face?

^ This little part here being needler's last paragraph? I'm saddened by your assessment of me :( We haven't even met!

No worries though :D You just prove my point.

    @ At poster above:

Aha! And here comes another who presumes to know me :D I'm pretty sure I've never mentioned the frequency of my smoking to anyone here but I'm sure any who have the audacity to even try it must be inclined to 'pump himself full of morphine and rub a cheesegrater on his face', eh?

I am a smoker. Yes I smoke cigarettes, cigars, and tobacco pipes. Yes sometimes I smoke outside because I am forced to. I smoke my cigars in a cigar shop while drinking brandy and enjoying the company of other smokers. I sometimes smoke a cigar while in my home. I am a smoker. But you know what I'm not? Someone who forces their opinions down other peoples throats. I won't walk up to you while you enjoy some mac n cheese and tell you heart disease is the leading cause of death in America and that the very food your eating is clogging your arteries. I won't look at you with a disgruntlement when I hear you talking on your cell phone and tell you that it can give me brain cancer. I won't tell you that your a bad person when you refuse to donate to a charity that gives food to the poor. I won't tell you that the coffee your drinking can lead to a bad heart. I won't be bothered by you when you block a line of people at a store because you want to give a store cleric your story of a bad day while giving others theirs. No I won't tell you that your large SUV or fancy cars ruin my air when you drive them. Because I am a smoker, and I mind my own damn business.

yes, but your smoke is hurting people who don't want it in their bodies. So, in a way, you are forcing it onto other people. Do you smoke in public outside of bars? And do other people live or ever go into your house? If not, then I apologize. But I presume, as a smoker, you sometimes smoke in public. And second hand smoke can and does cause cancer. So guess what, smokers are forcing it onto other people, hate to break it to you. It also is bad for me, because I am very smoke intolerant. I've nearly passed out from a person smoking across the street. So it's not just your own choice that affects you.

Yes, smoking can be quite harmful to the body and second-hand smoke can be even more deadly.

You can't compare talking on a cellphone to smoking, because the level of waves etc from them are too small to be harmful at all while smoking is harmful regardless. That comparsion is absurd. I find it both saddening and amusing at the level of ignorance and arrogance in this thread as well as the people that seem to think smoking is okay or not even harmful.

If you want to voulnteerly inhale toxic substances go ahead, but don't do where it will effect others, and it does if your around other people.

Oh, I'm sure everyone knows smoking is detrimental to the self and others. What propelled me to post here is the strong language some of the forumers here use in their you-jerk-me-I-jerk-you flaming/lynching of smokers. I've not even revealed any details of my involvement with cigarettes and already I've received curses and insults from certain people here :D How many other catalysts can draw such spiteful reactions from people?

lets see, how many other catalysts:
    -bigfoot
-abortion(Actually got insulted by a mod for seeing it as feasible in cases or rape or endangering the life of the mother)
-The plight of the US in the world
-if we made a geert wilders thread, probably geert wilders
-I think i could turn Afghanistan into a catalyst
    -atheism and religion(very big flamin')

I dont really mind smokers as long as they stay the F away from me while smoking. I have big trouble with the entrance to my school being surrounded by smoking teachers and students. I dont really come in bars so i dont care about that. When i was 8 i convinced my dad to stop smoking.

I personally have never had problems with smokers (being in a state that bans all smoking in public places ftw), atleast not any time in the last 5-6 years when I would have been old enough to really have an opinion on the issue. As for demonizing smokers while I have my own opinions on the issue, the population of smokers in general have kind of brought it upon themselves. Even if the majority is considerate (which would take some numbers to prove) such a large minority are noticeably inconsiderate that they have ruined the reputation of all smokers. To me that isn't really a bad thing because it hopefully get smoking completely banned more quickly than if it maintained the "cool" connotation that has been so effectively spread by tobacco companies. But that doesn't make it fair for the smoker who tries to do the right thing.

P.S. ijffdrie I would be interested to hear more about the abortion topic I don't remember one on this site and it has always been a subject that is interesting to me (not in this thread of course).
