No thank you Higgs, i was mosttly remembering the Knights Templar rituals, but why should it go away in the first place? Sure it can be taken to an extreme, but so can everything else. Its nothing more then a tool, with an idiot handling it when things go wrong.

16 year olds get the chance to handle it is analogues to an idiot handling it. No offence. Am I the only one in here who thinks that this 'system' is very esialy abusable and often is in fact abused? And I do mean often.

It really does depend on the school. The school I went to required you have a very high GPA to attend, and the majority of the students who went there did so because they wanted to. It wasn't easy getting in and required a lot of work. As for the hazing, if a few punches make you squeamish you shouldn't be at that school in the first place. The students who go there are there to learn how to be officers in the military, and if they can't take a few punches how in the hell are they going to pass mandatory hand to hand classes in their senior year?

Another thing why hazing is nothing like bullying is because all you have to do is put up with it for one year. After that year you come back to school, and you have the respect of every student in there. Bullying can go on for years, and often is more serious I'll agree. Hazings aren't as much to hurt the freshmen as just a few jabs, or pushing them into bushes. Bullying is beating someone down to the point they are terrified of school, and some times get injured. Also bullies try to target people by picking out weaker individuals and tries to humiliate them for no other reason to be mean. Hazing on the other hand although it picks the youngest group I've never seen a freshmen get hazed who did nothing to provoke it. Usually like I said if a freshmen kept to him self didn't cause any problems for other people and respected the older students. Then they left him alone.

Higgs you are obviously not the only one, but I am surprised about the number arguing in favor of hazings.

Jshep we are still talking about a high school righ? I ask because when you say "very high GPA to attend" do you mean you must mainain a high GPA or have a high GPA going in? Last I checked not every middle school gave out letter grades so the latter may be a problem. Also, is GPA the only requirement because if so then it is a rather bad one assuming you want something more than goood little lemmings (but then again this a military academy so who knows).

But back to the topic, your arguments in favor of hazings seem to boil down to: You can do it because it was done to you. It helps keep students in line and students will have to go through worse as part of normal schooling. Two of those are contextual and just because they are true in your case doesn't mean they always will be and as such should be ignored when talking about hazings in general. The last (or the first of the three) seems to be just be a simple abuse of power or "I do unto other as was done to me" which really is never a good argument.
