    It's a gigantic flaming pit somewhere in Uzbekistan, known by the locals as "The Door to Hell."

    The story behind it: in 1971 geologists were drilling for oil when the ground under the drilling rig collapsed to reveal an underground cavern full of natural gas. The geologists wanted to explore this cavern, but were unable to go far underground without being poisoned by the natural gas, so they decided to burn it, expecting the fire to die down in a few days, leaving the cavern safe to traverse. It's still burning today, with no signs of stopping.
