The shadows are messed up in a few places. I wonder if that contributes to the effect on top of the colours.

Unless they were chosen randomly, could someone explain why the countries got what they got? Spain has that bull trophy whatever so the others might have explanations as well.

 

Some make some sense to me.

Russia is often depicted as a bear when anthromorphized.

Germany... Heavily industrialized?

The Ottoman one tickles at me, something to do with the telescopes.

 

Russia
Well the Germans and Russians had an understanding when Bismark was an important man in Germany but when when he was no longer important and the Russians came back to renew the German/Russian treaty, the Germans basically told them to "get lost you stinky russians animals.". That plus the fudal system they had at the time with Czars and surfs hence the bear. And I'm sure it's a starving bear (the ribcage showing) as the bear wants to eat more intustrialised nations to get mor emeat on it's bones.

Germany
A heavily industrialised nation. With modern guns and a Navy almost as powerful as the British navy. In strength and armour plating but not size as yet. And they see the Russians as backward peoples that are easily defeated. Hence the cannon pointed at Russia. Napoleon also thought Russia was easily defeatable but the French at the time were wrong. And the Germans at the time (1914) thought the same. Only the Russian civil war and other issues around 1917 stopped Russia from winning again.

And the dagger from Germany into France are just there to say we have a little hatred against you. But only a little one. Because there are 2 little plots of land on the German/French border. I forget their names. And both countries wanted them both.

Also all the guns in Germany is cause of the arms race going at the time. Each country wanted more guns simply to say you can't attack us as we have more guns. It forced a stalemate for a while. Till it was broken with the duke dude getting killed.

Serbia
A skeleton here represents the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austrio/Hungarian Enpire being killed in Sarajevo Serbia.

Switzerland
Have the clock cause of Swiss watches. And cause of their stance. Stuck in a timewarp always on the side of total neutrality.

Italy
I'm not so sure why Italy are eels. The boot is there cause people call the shape of Italy itself a big boot with a heel. My best guess is, it is to do with 2 things.

The first Italo-Ethiopian War around 1900 where the African natives with spears had a war with the Italians and beat the Italian tanks. And from then on, the joke is "the italian tanks have 1 forward gear and 3 reverse". Slippery slimy and always able to get away and retreat.

Ottoman Empire
I believe this is (after consulting wikipedia) many telescopes looking out over Europe. Always looking for a country to form a treaty with. This is because they in history were ruthless conquerors. But by the 20th century people got sick of this and the Ottonam Empire faced many attacks from foreign armies wanting to seek revenge. And this happened so frequently that they needed allies to help them out. So they are looking over Europe for a friend.

Great Britian
Looks like an Ancient sea goddess. Which fits as they had the biggest navy in the world and the biggest emipre. They had bits of land all over the world.

Spain
That rea of the world is hidden as they to my knowledge had no real major part in the war or the lead up to it.

France
I'm not so sure why france is an elephant. The snout maybe cause French people are all generalised to have big noses. But apart from that I really don't know. Does anyone know why France is an elephant?

Well you can't argue that Fenix posts some truly awesome pictures.

 

That's a nice post, Ark. But I'm still very curious about Greece and the Scandinavian countries, as well as whether the French really leave their nails to grow longer
