But is this line of thinking because of some arbitary 'human nature' or because of societal conditioning?

I think its imprinted in us from nature, we want to survive and we will do anything to make sure we do.

it's only a part of how humans think.

humans are social animals. we are also instinctively inclined to help others (close family first, then strangers if you can afford it). acting for your personal benefit vs. the benefit of your family vs the good of the species as a whole is something that is ingrained into human behaviour. we've been doing stuff like that since the chimpanzee days.

with that said, some people lean more to one end than the other. in general, i find republicans are more focused on the "me" side whereas democrats are more towards the "rest of society" side. most western countries are also on the "rest of society" side.

You guys do realise that speculating on this is a red herring? Evolutionary psychology pretty much answers all these questions and it even tells you why.

You realize that the entire foundation of evolutionary psychology is founded upon arguments like this? Or that it is not the most accurate form of gathering information? So discussing things like this is pretty much what evolutionary psychology is about?

i should totally use that word in hangman.

So why exactly are you all parroting evolutionary psychology in a thread about the US healthcare reform?

To rationalize if humans are capable of a good health care system, and are happier because of it.

Higgs Boson, are you so ignorant to believe that anyone not a democrat or republican is ever going to make it into office? Anyone who is worth their salt in politics, and I am talking about politics in the REAL world, not the fake kind you see publicized on TV, knows that these guys are hand picked from a higher architecture of government; your vote makes absolutely no difference to begin with. Imagine your president being a puppet who's strings are being moved by a puppet master, and that puppet master is the super rich elite who have amassed a huge trust monopoly over major American industries, have hijacked the economic system itself, and have practically destroyed the common welfare with their bull**** policies, and reformations that congress has been forced to enact as law. It's the guys who don't pay their taxes, who are making all the decisions, all the threats, and are reaping all the benefits! I mean, the so called healthcare reformation was written by the major insurance companies themselves for Christ sakes!

This whole democratic republican system as it is now is like a paradigm, built out of the principles of psychological warfare, that keeps people locked into this idea that all there is is a lesser of two evils rather than thinking outside of the box, and finding out what is truly beneficial for themselves. It's all bull**** is what it really comes down to. And don't even summon the nerve to call me a conspiracy theorist when members of congress themselves, like Ron Paul, have been publicly exposing this, that this is what's really happening to our beloved country, in alternative media, AND MAIN STREAM MEDIA! While you sit on your ***, buying into the propaganda, completely clueless of the real affairs of the world, they have siren the alarms, DANGER DANGER, THE KAKA HAS HIT THE FAN!

These crooks, these vermin, these sadistic humanoids who have all the power, who are calling all the shots internationally, making all the threats to those who don't appeal, who are destroying our beautiful way of life, have hijacked the civilized world, and are marching it to a global tyranny. If things continue as they are, humanity will be made a slave while the elite who run the show will be the only ones free to enjoy the fruits of the world. It has happened before in the annuals of our history, and it will happen again if you let it. No daddy government is going drop from the sky, and take care of things for you. It is up to you to decide whether you want to go along with this insanity, and be made a slave to a bunch of megalomaniac psychopaths, or be what you were meant to be: FREE AND INDEPENDENT! So get off that noose, and stop worrying about democrats, republicans, and other stuff that doesn't even matter!

I can gladly tell you about the constitution! I think it is the greatest written work ever made next to the bible. Congress indeed has the power to levy taxes, though it is still considered a donation because taxes cannot be imposed for unconstitutional programs, wasteful spending, and by unconstitutional institutions. Does this sound like anything to you? Gee I wonder. We can talk more about the constitution later, for alas, I need sleep! Until then I can give whoever is reading time to reflect on everything I just said. If needed be, another thread can be opened to continue this discussion.. it is very important to be discussing these things. Adios!
