It is true that Mechs are BIG.

But

Their durability and defense make up for it.

Mechs are very durable.

 

The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

Well, the first real mecha was thought up by the Japanese. There wouldn't be any of those "western" type mechs without the Japanese influence. Also this thread is obviously biased towards the "western" designs of mecha and your taking the most cliche japanese design when they are actually a great variety of them and some looking more like your so called "western" mecha.

Wasn't the 1st mech concept the Tripod from War of the Worlds?

 

That was more of a mechanical robot, the first mecha with actual cockpits, pilots, etc was a Japanese design.

This is the original war of the worlds tripod as you see its more like a flying ship than actual "mecha"

Thats the film from the fifties. I'm talking about the book. In the book it has legs, tentacles to grab things and heat rays. It also has a cockpit on top, thats how the British military destroyed one in the book. By hitting the cockpit which killed the pilot.

As you see the body is still more like a ship and the legs consist of tentacles. It still looks much different than the most popular and common designs of mecha which was first designed by the Japanese. None of the other "western" mech posted in this thread look anything like the war of worlds tripod but are more based on Japanese designs.
