Because it is believing in a false hope. If there was some kind of huge natural disaster, many of the religious people involved in it would 'pray for help from god'. This would achieve nothing! In my opinion people need to help themselves, no god is going to help rescue survivors from a disaster, or bring supplies to a poverty stricken area, or do anything. People need to help themselves.

Actually, I mentioned Urey and Millers experiment. But yeah, it is the creation through evolution that will never be proven, which was what I was referring to during this discussion. Also, anyone who doesn't believe that animals slowly evolve over time is an idiot, because this part of evolution has already been witnessed and proven.

Hey, just because I strongly believe that there is no deity that has created the universe, does not mean that I can't post my opinion as well. I have said multiple times throughout my posts that I am not forcing my beliefs on anyone, nor am I trying to insult anyone.

EDIT: @ Ace, the point is that you obviously haven't read many of the previous posts. Also, 'dw peoples just believe in god and his teachings. christian ftw =D' is not a constructive argument. If everyone were to just post 'hey everybody, believe in this god, this god ftw!' then the thread would go nowhere.

I think this whole thread was a bad idea becuase arguments ALWAYS flare up when discussion religion and politics because noone will ever agree with anyone on the subject.

I am surprised it hasn't been locked because these things usually catch fire sooner

Btw, privateparts is right. Believe what you want to believe, coz basically no one would care what you believe. What matters most is yourself and your own beliefs. That's how society works. But there really isn't any good reason to power down ace.

 

I reckon that there was actually a fairly good reason for the powerdown. Saying 'dw peoples just believe in god and his teachings... christian ftw =D' is telling people to join your religion. This is not what this thread is about. Pretty much, up until then, all posts were fairly constructive and expressed an opinion. Saying, 'don't worry people, you just have to worship the christian god' is not constructive and is not expressing an opinion. Ace was better off saying, 'I am a christian for these reasons...'.

No way , I have heard about ackbar but privateparts isnt as bad as ackbar but still bad but I do beleive he should be banned!

 

I don't have time to quote but I hope I remember enough from what read. privateparts, you say that believing is like gamble? You're aboslutely right! Why do people gamble then? Because they MIGHT win, it's not everyone but many people would gamble even if there's high chance of losing. The difference here is that if you win at religion you gain everythng and what do you loose if you're wrong? Pretty much nothing. If there's no afterlfe and you just vanish from existance, it doesn't matter if you believed or not. In this case if you didn't believe and lived your life to the fullest - it still wouldn't matter after you've vanished. So people take their chances, because there's little to loose and much to gain. You understand now why would they do that? I don't want you to start believing, convert you etc. but you wanted to know why, so here's my answer, I hope this helps.
Also this thread is not ment for converting, we all have various beliefs and we are interested in other's approaches to religon. If you are not interested you don't have to read it, simple

Someone mentioned a catastrophe and religious people reaction to it, well here's a story for you.
There was once heavy rain and the town was endangered with flood. People were evacuating and someone told the priest to escape with them. The priest said 'Don't worry, god'll save me'. When there was more and more water another person came to priest and offered help. Priest replied the same. Eventually there was so much water that priest had to stay on church's roof. Another boat came by and priest rejected offer by saying 'God'll save me' again. Obviously the priest died and when he went to Heaven he asked God.
"Why didn't you save me?"
"I didn't? I sent you three boats."


What wanted to say is that it's not religion that makes peoples fools. That's just how they are

Also reason i went :bad: in the first place is (from my opinion) it looks like u (ace) came on and just told everyone to believe in god and christinaity - which is very ignorant and not at all wat the thread is about. And No i am not ackbar but trust me it's the internet you would not be able to tell who ackbar is just by his 'word forming' he would simply 'act' differently, blah blah won't go into any more detail coz I don't care if you think I am Hitler reincarnate or Osama bin Laden.

ANyway back to the whole idea of this post, Meee I think you are wrong with your "nothing to loose theory" just like gambling in real life - theres a small chance of winning big bucks, and theres a large chance you'll just loose more cash.

The same applies for religions, many religions say if you do not believe in their religion you will go to hell or not be allowed into heaven or live in pain for eternity etc. etc. Therefor by believing in a particular religion you are taking a big risk. What if you picked the wrong religion, then the other religion would roast you for not believing in them, and you would go to hell or watever.

That's why I choose not to believe in any religion what-so-ever, im an athetiest or however you say it. Do I BELIEVE in god? No. Do I BELIEVE god doesn't exist? No. I keep and open mind. Yes I am also taking a big gamble by not believing in any religion, becoz I am immediately condeming myself to a tortured existence if any of those X amount of religions turns out to be real. But hey I would rather take a gamble that doesn't involve me wasting countless hours reading the bible, going to church, praying etc.

Anyway this is MY opinion folks, and this goes for all my previous posts and any posts after: I am not trying to force you to become athiest, this is just my opinion, and I just ask that you weigh it against your opinion, THEN make up your mind. If any of you tries to blame me for trying to 'convert' you or watever i WILL power you down.

 

You've got a point there. With so many different religions we're almost bound to be screwed in the end, plus there's always chance that your religion will send you to hell for something. So here comes in my great theory about life in general: Life sucks.

That's also why people who commit suicide confuse me. They are wasting the life that has been given to them, maybe they want to go on to the more peaceful afterlife? As mentioned above that's a big gamble. Or maybe they are just feeling so depressed they just want to stop existing? Then you have to look at the reason WHY people get depressed, many different reasons - all very small and pathetic when you look at humanity from a whole.

But hey we all have our own lives, do with them what you will. Unless someone else decides to kill you, then yeh too bad.
