I perhaps didnt make it clear, but you and i are in fact in agreeance there :)

I truely believe that the pursuit of knowledge should always be promoted, and that includes religion and such.

    ...yes, well. Good point. Well.

High five for expanding our minds then.

I find it very hard to believe that that test could possibly be accurate. Unless they polled five Americans and assumed that that would provide a general statistic (and one of the five happened to be as dumb as a rock) I don't see how such a figure could possibly be true. Where did you get this from?

I believe it... there's a lot more ignorant ppl than you realize.

If Americans can't find their country on a world map (it's pretty big too), I'm not surprised if they don't know basic facts about the universe. Most regard school as a waste of time or actively work to avoid learning anything.

but yeah, that's why I said earlier that atheism seems like a faith to me - I'm glad ItzaHexGor agrees, some ppl equate atheism to realism... but anybody who's willing to make an absolute statement about god, even that he doesn't exist, is forming a belief system...

agnosticism is the choice for ppl who think it's beyond us

i know what you mean, the only thing that comes to mind is people who droped out of school, religion saying it is so, the test could of been placed at a spot that didnt have many people, immigrants ( legal or otherwise) and a few other things too like how the question was worded. i myself think its more like 10% of americans, but who knows, theres about 300 million people in america but 100 million of those is immigrants, tho they many had to take a test to get in, the test is only about the american government.

the following is statisic is the results of a couple of polls of my own.

Percentage of Americans who say that God has spoken to them: 36

Percentage of Americans who regularly attend religious services: 43

How can 20% of Americans think the sun revolves around the earth? Are that many people as dumb as rocks, its insane. I don't see how people could come up with those answers. I can understands about not finding Iraq/Iran since there are so many countries in the Middle East, but you have to be pretty educationally deficient to believe the sun revolving around the Earth.

I do agree that polling immigrants and other people with different background would affect the poll, but to still have a percentage that high is kind of worrysome.

Actually it was just one guy who came up with the idea and had pretty bad life because of it. (His book on this was banned). As with many such theories it was only AFTER his death that the studying started (but yeah, then came theories speculations and such).
Just thought to give a credit to my fellow countryman.
btw. Thanks for translating 'agnostic' for us, now it all makes sense. "I don't know." is probably phrase I use most often ;D

Well I belive the 20% score. It may not be that high for all of America but still. I wouldn't necessarily call all of them stupid but gnorant for sure.
Plus I think that many imigrants would actually tell that sun DOESN'T orbit the Earth.

In most cases of polls and statistics like that, it is the 20% of American's questioned or interviewed that believe that the world is flat or the Sun orbits the Earth or whatever. Obviously, much less than 20% of all American citizens believe that the Sun orbits the Earth. There needs to be more information about the poll, not just the outcome. How many people were questioned or interviewed? If they only ever interviewed five people and just happened to get one really dumb or drunk guy, then that instantly gives you a 20%, which is simply not true. What age were the people questioned? If you're asking extremely young people then they would obviously answer differently to older people. Where did the people who were questioned live? Asking where they live/where they have grown up might not have as much of an impact in asking if the Sun orbits the Earth, but if you're asking how many people are catholic when you're in India or something, then it will obviously have an impact the result.
For this to be a proper poll, you need to say the percentage of people who thought that the Sun did in fact orbit around the Earth, the total number of people interviewed, the age bracket and where the poll was taken.

Sorry, I have to put up a post that really doesn't serve this topic at all.

Might I say though I think we can all agree on one thing in religion....Tom Cruise is not the new prophet. Do we have an accord?

I believe it has been sc2forums' will to not allow threads concerning religion at all for that very reason... I'll bring it up when he gets back.

I'll touch on the subject less directly connected with religion.

Anyway, I looked at that source. I would call it highly questionable, definitely biased. But even a biased site can get ahold of meaningful data. Did it? Well we don't know, it certainly doesn't cite any studies or papers, it just says "this guy says" before dropping numbers and qualifications. I wouldn't put a whole lot of money on statements like that. It is certainly enough for a news article, but not enough for a serious discussion.

Now, what bothers me, is that you guys are trying to establish the relative intelligence of Americans with
data (ignoring for now how shady it is) that doesn't include similar studies in other countries. For all we know, 87% of all people in other developed nations believe the sun orbits the earth. That would just mean that everyone is stupid, and Americans less so, but we don't have the other data to prove or disprove that statement. What I am saying is, this data really does say nothing. We don't know if this percent has increased or decreased over time, we don't know how different demographics affect the data, we don't know how the question was framed, we don't know if this data wasn't pulled from this guy's rear. That article simply doesn't give us enough to work with!

Please, in the future, don't just swallow any number someone gives you, no matter how trusted, ok? And even if you do get numbers, good ones, ask yourself if you have all of the numbers you would need to draw a conclusion before drawing conclusions with them. Yes, I am also talking to those of you that are questioning this data. You should have rejected it on its lack of base and context before even beginning to speculate on possible errors.

Seriously, I just got done banning someone, so don't test me.

Anyway, the Hebrew religion is a pretty interesting one to me. It's probably got some of the most inherent culture of any religion, due to the fact that it's an actual ethnicity.
